Holiday Season Self-Care In 20 Minutes Or Less
The past few weeks have been defined by a lot of shopping and socializing. You’ve probably been eating and drinking a whole lot more while sleeping and resting a whole lot less. This season certainly comes with more than its fair share of stress and a lot of us are more fatigued than we’d like to admit.
It may be tempting to tough it out, but self-care is a good habit to cultivate, especially now that the new year is just around the corner. Rather than over-exert yourself and going way out of your way to ensure that everyone has a magical holiday, why don’t you carve out some time for yourself? When was the last time you relaxed and recharged for you? If the answer is “I don’t remember,” then read on. We know you’re extremely busy, but check out these renewing self-care activities that you can do in twenty minutes or less. Surely you can spare less than half an hour at the start or end of each day to center and steady yourself. Try any or all of these, you’ll be ready to charge into life’s challenges as you always do.
1. Take a walk.
Sometimes, a little fresh air and sunshine will do you good. Don’t forget to bundle up if it’s cold out! When you take your walk, don’t think of it as daily exercise to burn some of the excess calories – though maintaining daily physical activity is important as well. Rather, keep mindfulness in mind as you walk. Take this time to be quiet and just walk around with the intention of keeping your attention towards the little things around you. Allow the everyday and ordinary to surprise you.
2. Read a book.
As soon as you finish reading this blog entry, why don’t you shut down your digital devices and read a book? E-readers work wonders, of course, but if you really want to disconnect and disappear into a different world, go for a physical paper book for a totally different feel. Don’t wait until the new year to start on that title that’s been sitting on your bedside table since forever. Do something for yourself and start it now. Light a candle while you read to really get you in the mood. Our Diamond Candle in Applejack & Orange Peel will not only keep you in that festive holiday mode, but the cinnamon in its scent can stimulate your senses and help you fight off the mental fatigue while improving your focus.
3. Soak in the tub.
Instead of those quick five-minute cold showers you hop in and out of in an attempt to get a head start on your day, why not go for something a little less frantic and a lot more relaxing? If you have a tub at home, make full use of it with a good soak. A long, hot shower works too, but there’s something special about being able to lie on your back while all your troubles melt away. Light a Pentagon Candle in Lavender & Chamomile to really put you in a relaxed mood.
4. Stay off your phone.
Do you check your emails or text messages at the start of each day? Or, do you browse through your social media feeds to help you get sleepy before bed? Break those habits, they’re not good for you at all. Hyper-connectivity can be horrible, especially during the holiday season when all you see is either curated perfection or cranky Scrooges. Don’t place your phone on your bedside table. Instead of holding your phone and risking it falling on your face, unwind by doing something offline instead. Read, write, meditate, just put your phone down and put your mind at ease.
The holiday season can be way too hectic, but we hope you can take some time for yourself during the most wonderful time of the year. Happy Holidays!
